    • 1). Take the base of the fountain you have chosen and drill a hole in the bottom. If you have chosen a planter, the bottom may already have a drainage hole. If not, use a drill and make sure that the hole is large enough for the water pump's tube. Most tubes will be approximately 2 inches in diameter.

    • 2). Choose the location for your fountain and dig a hole for an underground basin. The hole should be as wide and as deep as the plastic basin. Drop the basin into the hole and, using a level, make sure that the top is level with the soil line.

    • 3). Fit the top of the basin with a piece of metal or mesh screening. You will need to create a hole in the center of the screen for the water pump's water tube and power cord. Use a pair of cutting shears and create a hole that is about 2 inches in diameter.

    • 4). Place the water pump in the center of the underground basin. Push the power cord and water tube through center of the metal screening. Then place the screening on top of the basin.

    • 5). Take the water tube and push it though the bottom of the fountain base. Then situate the base on top of the metal screen. Fill the receptacle and the underground basin to the top with water. Drag the power cord to a nearby electrical outlet.

    • 6). Add colorful rocks and stones around the base of the fountain. This will cover the metal screen. Then plug in the water pump and watch the water flow over the sides of the receptacle. The water will flow down the sides, through the rocks at the base of the fountain, and back to the underground basin. The water pump will continue to keep moving the water.
