How Is Yellow Watermelon Grown?

    A Place in the Sun

    • One of the first considerations taken by yellow watermelon growers comes in the form of selecting a sunny spot. Watermelon of all types is considerably damaged by frost, so a warm, sunny spot is a must when it comes to growing yellow watermelon. The ideal temperature for growing yellow watermelon hovers around 75 degrees F. For those living in moderate climate areas, this may mean planting early, just as winter is coming to a close and spring hits.

    Proper Soil

    • Yellow watermelon seeds are planted in moisture-retaining soil. A slight sandiness to the soil is agreeable to the fruit. Prepare the area with mulch a few weeks before planting. The seeds are then planted in 1-foot-deep holes, which are then filled up with a combination of soil and manure. Yellow watermelons generally require around 2 feet on each side to grow, meaning they should be spaced out around 4 feet apart from each other.

    Growing Period

    • Watermelons of all types require a long growing period, and yellow watermelons are no exception to this. In fact, yellow watermelons take around 100 days to grow from seed to eatable melon. During the first period of growth (within the soil), the watermelons should be covered (by standard row covers) for protection from the elements and added warmth. After the plant has penetrated the surface of the soil, however, these covers can be removed to allow for essential pollination.

    Watering

    • The watermelon plant will require daily watering, of course, especially as it breaks the surface of the soil. But when the yellow watermelon has grown to half of its projected size, cease watering. Natural watering (rain, natural ground moisture and air moisture) can take it from here. Continued watering by you will only make the yellow watermelon lose much of its flavor. When the 100 days are up, the yellow watermelon is fully grown.
