    Paper Hat

    • Create a paper Native American headpiece with two pieces of colored construction paper. Cut it lengthwise approximately 1 1/2-inches wide. Have your child draw designs on this paper with crayon. Fit it onto your child's head. While you are waiting for the glue to dry, draw 8-inch long feathers out of colored paper and cut them out. Glue the feathers to the inside of the headpiece so it stands up in the back.

    Feather Headdress

    • Use feathers for a simple Native American headdress. Use heavy paper to cut a strip of paper to wrap around the crown of the head. Purchase colored feathers from a craft store or collect bird feathers. Place the feathers side-by-side along one side of the paper strip. Once you are satisfied with their placement, tape the feathers down with a long piece of clear tape. Wrap the strip of paper together into a headdress so the feathers are on the inside. Secure together with another piece of tape.

    Centerpiece

    • An Indian hat can be used to create a Thanksgiving centerpiece. Save a used toilet paper cardboard roll. Use paint to decorate the entire roll. You can use simple Native American designs. Cut out small paper feathers roughly 4-inches tall or use small feathers. Glue them to the inside top of the centerpiece so it looks like a headdress. Place them in the center of your table or you can place name cards inside them for dinner place cards.

    Foam Kit

    • Foam kits are also available to craft Native American hats. Websites such as Making Friends and Oriental Trading sell these types of craft kits (see Resources). Using foam glue, affix support strips to the foam feathers. Glue the feathers onto the headband. Glue on decorations to the headband, such as triangles and fringe. Glue on the Velcro piece so it will fit onto your head. Some kits also come with side feathers and beads.
