How to Hook Up Propane Tank

    • 1). Check that the grill is on a flat, stable surface. Because a full propane tank is heavy, a full-tank replacement may cause the grill to suddenly shift or roll if not located properly. Once the grill is secure, make sure the old propane tank is completely closed using the three-star handle located on the top of the tank valve.

    • 2). Unscrew the regulator/hose assembly from the tank valve. Remember, this assembly has reversed threads as a safety feature, so turn it clockwise (in the opposite direction that a light bulb unscrews). Remove the old tank and set it aside.

    • 3). Lift the new tank, and carefully place it where the old tank had been. Make sure it is in the designated spot, according to the grill's operating manual. This is important because none of the rubber hosing that makes up the regulator hose assembly can touch any hot grill components while grilling. In addition to a safety device, most grills manufactured after 1995 have either an indentation in the grill bottom where the tank should be placed or a rack into which the tank is fitted.

    • 4). Check to make sure that the three-star handle located on the top of the tank valve is completely closed. Remove the plastic cover from the threads on the tank valve. Once the cover is removed, insert the regulator/hose assembly into the tank valve. After carefully aligning the threads properly, slowly tighten the regulator/hose assembly. Remember that it is reverse-threaded, so turn the regulator/hose assembly counterclockwise to tighten.

    • 5). After the regulator/hose assembly is completely tight, slowly turn on the tank valve using the three-star knob located on top. Drip soapy water using the washcloth directly on the regulator/hose assembly fittings several times and look for tiny bubbles to appear. Bubbles will indicate that the connection is leaking propane. If no leaks are present, turn the tank valve off. You are now ready to grill.
