How to Crochet a Red & White Heart Tablecloth for a Wedding
- 1). Check your gauge. The gauge for this project is 15 single crochet. Stitches worked in the back loops should only measure 3 1/4 inches across. The height of 13 rows should measure 3 1/2 inches. Try switching hooks to a larger one (if your measurements are small) or a smaller one (if your measurements are large) if your gauge is off. Add or subtract motifs to achieve the desired dimensions if the weight of your yarn makes this gauge impossible to reach. The Home Institute provides some helpful advice on tablecloth sizing.
- 2). Start with your background color and chain 278, then single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each stitch across. Fasten off at the end of the first row, leaving a 3 inch to 4 inch tail. This will start your tassels and ensure the pattern remains consistent. Do not turn the work (277 stitches made).
- 3). Attach the background color to the first stitch of the first row (right side facing you) with a slip stitch through both loops of the beginning single crochet. Leave excess yarn for the tassel on this side. Chain 1, and then single crochet through both loops of this same stitch. Single crochet in both loops of the next stitch and then single crochet in each stitch across, going through only the back loop until you get to the last two stitches in the row. Single crochet through both loops in each of these stitches and fasten off, again leaving enough excess for the tassel.
- 4). Attach the background color to the first stitch of row 2 with the right side facing you. Make sure to leave extra yarn for the tassel, in the same manner as in row 2 (single loop stitch in first stitch, chain 1, single crochet through both loops of the same stitch, single crochet through both loops of the next stitch). Double crochet stitch in the remaining loop of row 1, stitch 3. Single crochet in the back loop only of row 2, stitch 4. Alternate the double crochet and single crochet stitches all the way across to the final two stitches in the row. Single crochet through both loops in these last two stitches. Fasten off, leaving a tail for the tassel.
- 5). Attach the background color to the first stitch of the last row in the same way as has been established with the single crochet in the first two stitches of the row. Single crochet through the back loop of the next stitch, then double crochet in the front loop of the fourth stitch on the row before last. Repeat the single crochet/double crochet pattern through to the last two stitches of the row and single crochet in both loops of the last two stitches. Fasten off, leaving a tail for the tassel.
- 6). Repeat step 4 for the next row (double crochet in the front loop of the row before last and single crochet in the back loop of the last row) across to the final two stitches.
- 7). Add your secondary color by laying it across the back side of your work and leaving a tail for the tassel. Slip stitch with the background color in the first stitch of row six, chain 1, single crochet through both loops in this stitch and the next one, carrying the secondary color with you and working over it to lock it into the back of the work. Single crochet only in the back loop of the next stitch, double crochet in the front loop of the next stitch on the row before last, and single crochet in back loop of the next stitch. Switch to the secondary color locking the background color to the back of the work in the same way you did earlier. Work with the secondary color and single crochet in the back loops only of the next 15 stitches. Switch to the background color on the 15th stitch. Repeat from "single crochet only in the back loop of the next stitch" across. You should have 15 blocks of secondary color framed by 3-stitch bands of background color all the way across. Single crochet through both loops of the final two stitches on the row and fasten off.
- 8). Repeat step 7 with the exception of double crochet, single crochet, double crochet on the background color bands. Then repeat step 7 again identically.
- 9). Create the heart motif beginning on row 9 by switching colors on the 8th stitch of the 15 stitch color block and switching back for the 9th stitch. In row 10, switch to background color on the 7th stitch, back to secondary color on the 8th stitch, background color for 9th stitch and secondary for the rest of the block on the 10th stitch. Color changes on row 11 take place on the 6th and 10th stitches, with all others being the secondary color. Row 12 changes color on the 5th and 11th stitches. Row 13 changes color on the 4th and 12th stitches. Rows 14 and 15 repeat this pattern, but row 15 gets an extra colored stitch on stitch 8. Row 16 changes colors on the 5th stitch. Carry this color for three stitches to make the top of the heart, change back to the secondary color for one stitch (directly above the colored stitch on row 15), and then back to the background color for another three stitches.
- 10
Finish the motif block. For the next three rows, repeat step 7 with single crochet and double crochet, alternating appropriately. Create three rows by repeating steps 3 and 4. - 11
Complete the body of the tablecloth by repeating steps 7 through 10 until you have 20 completed heart motifs running up the length of the cloth. - 12
Finish the tablecloth by tying up the loose fringes. You can tie two or more "tails" together along the sides for greater stability and to give the edge a more finished look. Insert pieces of yarn twice the length of the tails you left at even intervals across the top and bottom and tie them in place to finish off your tablecloth.
