Aside from home remedies, all natural sleeping aid may be the best ally to have on our side in the battle against sleep deprivation.
Most have very few, if any side effects, are non habit forming, and have less of a chance to leave you with a "hangover" the next day like many prescription medications do.
However, before we run off to the drug store, it should be noted that natural doesn't necessarily mean pills.
There are many non-pill forms of all natural sleep aid available such as aromatherapy, sound conditioning, or simply eating certain sleep friendly foods.
These don't require the inconvenience of speaking with our doctor beforehand, or the worry of side effects and "hangovers".
Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is a type of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds to alter our mood, cognitive function or even health.
Scents that are helpful for sleeping are chamomile, clary sage, geranium, lavender, mandarin, marjoram, neroli, rose, sandalwood and ylang-ylang.
You can use these in a variety of ways, such as in a bath, as a candle, or even putting some on a piece of cloth and putting it into your pillow case.
White Noise White noise is a specific type of relaxing audio designed to help you get to sleep and block out distracting noise.
You can purchase either white noise machines or white noise cd's.
White noise machines are small electronic units that emit a variety of white noise sounds, from a single white noise to multiple ambient noises, depending on the machine.
The cd's are sound recordings that play just like music, except they play sounds selected for their soothing and noise masking properties rather than playing music.
Sleepy foods Sleepy foods, as I like to call them, are another simple and great alternative to explore before popping pills.
Foods that are high in calcium and magnesium are great for inducing sleep and have no risks that prescription or OTC medications may have.
Increase your dairy intake to get the calcium increase you need, while eating green vegetables, nuts, and grains will give you the magnesium boost you need to knock you out at night.
