How to Grow a Passionfruit Vine
- 1). Sow passionfruit vine seed in sterile soil indoors. Keep moist and out of direct sunlight.
- 2). Transfer seedlings to permanent location when they are about one foot tall and after all danger of frost has passed. Plant seedlings at least 10 feet apart.
- 3). Select a sunny planting location. In extremely hot locations, provide partial shade. Provide a fence or trellis for vine to grow on. Vines can grow up to 20 feet long or more.
- 4). Conduct a soil test. Testing kits are available at most home and garden centers and through county extension offices. Passionfruit vines prefer sandy, loamy soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. Spade or till amendments into the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches.
- 5). Plant vines in soil at the same depth they were growing in their container. Do not mound soil around the trunk of the vine. Water thoroughly to a depth of at least six inches.
- 6). Apply a 3-inch layer of pine straw around the vine's base.
- 7). Water daily to a depth of at least six inches, or as often as needed to keep soil evenly moist. Experts with California Rare Fruit Growers recommend applying 10-5-20 fertilizer around plants four times a year.
