Common Household Glass Cleaners
- Common distilled vinegar, one of the best items to have in the house for cleaning, is effective for cleaning glass. Mix 1/2 tsp. of mild dish detergent with 1/4 cup of vinegar and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake together and use like a commercial cleaner. The Vinegar Institute recommends combining equal parts of vinegar and warm water, which won't leave streaks or film.
- Add isopropyl alcohol to white vinegar to make another common household glass and window cleaner. Combine 1 1/2 cups of isopropyl alcohol, 1 cup of white vinegar and a couple drops of mild dish soap in an empty spray bottle. Spray directly to your windows. This solution also works well on chrome, hard tiles and other surfaces.
- Ammonia is another must-have for natural house cleaning. Put 3 tsp. of ammonia and 1 tsp. of vinegar in an empty spray bottle and fill the rest of the way with water to clean windows. You can also mix 2 tbsp. of ammonia with a few drops of mild dish soap and 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Fill it up with water, shake and spray.
- A lemon-fresh smell is a plus to using lemon juice for cleaning windows and other glass surfaces. In an empty spray bottle, mix 3 tbsp. of lemon juice with a few drops of mild dish soap and 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol. Fill up with water and shake. Straight lemon juice also makes glass shine. Spray it on glass surfaces and wipe off with a paper towel.
- When cleaning windows with vinegar, alcohol or ammonia, keep these liquids away from exposed window seals, which can dry, crack or decay faster than normal.
