How to Get Rid of Black Algae Before Closing My Pool
- 1). Remove the heads of the black algae in your swimming pool using a pumice stone. Be careful using the pumice stone on pool liners made of vinyl or fiberglass or those that are painted.
- 2). Brush off the rest of the black algae in the pool. Be sure to use a brush made for the specific type of pool liner or surface you have. Vinyl, painted or fiberglass tiles can handle a nylon-bristle brush. Use an algae brush on concrete pool and a tile brush or pumice on tile pools.
- 3). Vacuum the pool to remove the algae that you have brushed away from the liner. Use a slow back and forth motion when vacuuming. Overlap each area by several inches to make sure you remove all the black algae.
- 4). Backwash your filter to remove any black algae that has been filtered through the system.
- 5). Rub a trichlor tablet over areas of the pool that were affected by black algae. This helps keep it from coming back.
- 6). Add one dose of copper algaecide to the pool to prevent future growth of black algae. Each brand of this chemical can have different instructions for dosage so follow them carefully.
