Instructions to Make Stool Cushions

    The Fabric

    • Choose a medium weight solid fabric, like denim, corduroy or fleece. Use easily washable fabrics that are colorfast. Cushions can be made with more decorative fabrics, like upholstery fabrics and brocades, but they won't be as easily cleaned and may wear out faster because of it.

    Measuring and Cutting

    • Measure the size of your stool. If the stool is round, measure the distance across the center of the seat, and add 1 inch. If the stool is square, measure across in both directions and add 1 inch both ways. Carefully trace the shapes in the correct size on the fabric and cut out two copies of this shape.

    Sewing and Stuffing

    • When sewing the pieces together, sewing twice around the perimeter is a good way to ensure less popping of the seams later on. Make sure to leave a large enough opening to insert the stuffing. To stuff the cushion, you can use commercial pre-made pillow forms or bagged stuffing, like that used for stuffed animals. A large button sewn into the center of the cushion at the end adds a nice decorative touch.

    Change for the Seasons

    • Stool cushion sets can quickly and easily be made for each season or holiday. Fabric stores and online fabric shops carry specialized fabrics for holidays and occasions. Make a new set of cushions for Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving, or change with the seasons by making light and bright cushions for spring and rich, jewel-toned cushions for winter.
