Common Causes

• Old food debris that fall down into a sink can harden and rot, creating foul-smelling gases that rise from the drain into the homer. Fibrous substances such as coffee grounds or bones can jam disposals, trapping this debris inside the drain pipe.
  
  

Deodorizing

• Sanitizing the sink will stop any trapped debris from smelling. One sanitizing method is to pour a solution of water and oxygen bleach into the sink. This organic substance has no toxic properties and can safely travel through the plumbing system without causing damage.
  
  

Unclogging

• If the kitchen sink's drain pipe has become clogged with old food scraps or other garbage, it will continue to smell until someone removes the trapped garbage from the system. Homeowners can remove such a clog themselves by first disengaging any electricity to the disposal unit, then opening the disposal housing underneath the sink.
