Flower Crafts for Children
- Provide supplies and simple materials to children to make flower crafts for holidays, special events or to give as gifts. You will be able to watch them reveal their creative and imaginative abilities as they work with papers, foam and embellishments. If you give children an age-appropriate project or two to make, they should be able to accomplish the project task in less than an hour.
- Show children how to draw outlines of flowers, such as daisies or sunflowers on colored construction paper. Let them cut the flowers out with safety scissors. Punch a hole in the middle of each flower. Make a knot on a pipe cleaner 3 inches from one end. The children can slip one flower on the pipe cleaner and add a plastic bead. Slip another paper flower on the pipe cleaner, another bead and one more paper flower. Put on two more beads and wind the end of the pipe cleaner around so the beads and flowers do not fall off. Embellish the paper flowers with glitter glue.
- Give each child a pre-cut foam door hanger. Also give them peel-and-stick foam flower images in different shapes, sizes and colors. The children can decorate the door hanger however they like. With markers, they can draw little flowers around the foam ones, sign their name or add a message such as "To Mom With Love" or "Happy Mother's Day." This project can be made with holiday themes, such as Christmas or Easter, for themselves or to give as a gift.
- Give the children an assortment of colorful plastic buttons in various sizes and shapes. Let them pick out buttons to create a flower card with buttons. Fold a sheet of card stock in half to make a blank card (to fit an A-2 size envelope). The children can use white glue to attach a 3-inch piece of green pipe cleaner as the flower stem on the card. Starting with one button as the center of the flower, glue buttons around it to design a flower. Have the children write a greeting inside the card with markers. Holiday themes can be used in this project, such as red buttons, in the shape of hearts for flowers.
- Children can attach little fake flowers in different colors around a 5-by-7 inch flat picture frame with white glue. Sometimes, bags of flower ends and odd pieces are available at fabric and craft shops at discount prices. Let the children arrange the flowers on the frame as they wish before gluing them on.
