How to Design a Poppy
- 1). Go to the library and study pictures of poppies to help give you some design ideas. Sign the books out so you have them at hand when you work on your design.
- 2). Sketch your poppy design on a piece of paper. Calculate the scale according to how you are going to use it. If, for instance, it is going to be a broach, it could be small and more demure than if it is going to be part of a collage of flowers for a large poster.
- 3). Draw the shape of the poppy with four-rounded indents in a heavy line. Refer to the library book if you desire a visual aid. Add the stem if you want your design to be "grounded." If it is a memorial type poppy, the stem isn't necessary.
- 4). Use shading to help achieve a sense of depth and texture.
- 5). Add some pollen and feather-like "hair" on the stem of the flower to make it look more realistic.
- 6). Play with your design until you get it the way you want it to look. Erase elements of the poppy you don't like -- such as the stem, for instance -- and keep working until you are happy with the creation.
- 7). Add a personal touch to your poppy design. It could be giving the poppy shape a slightly different twist, or adding a stem that curls around.
- 8). Pick a color. While poppies are generally red and yellow, they may also be green if they are still in the bud. There is no art rules about poppy colors, so if the creative urge takes you, design a purple poppy to go with your new shoes.
- 9). Cut out your design if you are going to be using the pattern to make something, such as a poppy-shaped handbag.
