How to Remove Vertical Siding

    • 1). Use your pry bar to lift a piece of vertical wood siding. Vertical wood siding can be comprised of a series of individual boards, prefabricated panels, or boards and battens. With individual boards and panels you will want to find the seams and pry the pieces up from there. Board and batten siding is a series of wider boards with narrower boards nailed over the board seams. First pry off the narrower battens, and then the boards themselves.

Insert the pry bar into the seam between boards or panels and pry the piece up enough to expose the nail shafts.

    • 2). Use a slater's ripper to pull the nails out or a hacksaw blade saw to cut the nail shafts off. A slater's ripper is a specialized, thin tool with a hook on the end. The slater's ripper can be slid under the pried board, where it can then be used to grab and pull the nails out. A hack saw blade saw is a narrow, toothed saw blade mounted on a handle. The saw is slid under the pried board where it can then be used to saw the nail shafts until the board is free.

    • 3). Pull or cut all of the nails until the board or panel can be pulled from the wall. Continue prying the boards, then pulling or cutting the nails, until you have removed all of the vertical siding from the house.
