How to Create a Siphon

    • 1). Submerge a hose in the top container. The hose should fully fill with liquid and both ends of the hose should be submerged.

    • 2). Cover the opening of one end of the hose (e.g., with a cork, your hand, or by bending the hose near the end). Garden supply stores sell attachments with stopcocks, if you are using a garden hose. The point is to keep any air from getting in while you transfer that end to the lower container.

    • 3). Move the covered end of the hose over the height barrier and down to the lower container. Take off the cover or unbend the hose, and the fluid will start pouring out of the siphon into the lower container.

    • 4). Check that the liquid level of the higher container is going down. If not, there may be too large of a bubble at the top of the siphon, and you'll have to try again from the start, making sure to keep air from entering the closed end of the hose.
