Have you ever experienced situations where you were terribly sleepy but could not seem to close your eyes and fall asleep? Or do you have difficulty staying awake while watching the television? Does your face show you look exhausted? If so, you may be suffering from sleep disorders.
Those symptoms are few symptoms that may vary from one to another.
However, to understand more about sleep disorders, one needs to understand about sleep itself.
Sleep disorders are contributing factors that may lead to fatigue and drowsiness.
The lack of awareness and concentration can cause harm that will eventually relate to other mental disorder or a much greater factor as you lose productivity.
Common people might not realize that sleep actually consists of five stages, from the first stage to Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep stage.
During the first stage, also called as light sleep, most people can easily be awakened by noises or disturbances in their surroundings.
If you have ever experienced a sense of falling while sleeping or suddenly feel like jumping, you are experiencing a phase called hypnic myoclonia.
This phase occurs in first stage of sleep.
At the second stage of sleep, our brain reactions become slower and in stage three, it gets slower than in stage two.
And at the fourth stage, there is no eye movement and usually it is hard for you to fully wake up when you are already in this stage as you are in deep sleep.
The REM sleep stage is where muscles become paralyzed temporarily.
This stage usually happens after 70 to 90 minutes of sleep.
Someone has to undergo all of these stages in order to get a good sleep.
Thus, when somebody is having a sleep disorder, he or she might not get to certain stage in the sleep or experience delay between stages.
Sleep disorders particularly set difficulties in sleeping at stage one or two, and REM.
There are many ways to cure sleep disorders depending on severity of the case.
Behavioral and medical treatments exist to eliminate sleep disorders.
However, if such condition continues for a long period of time, seeking help from a professional is highly recommended.
