How to Fill Planters With Gravel Liners

    Two-Planter Method

    • 1). Locate a pot small enough to fit inside a larger planter. Repot your plants or flowers into the smaller pot by gently turning over the original pot and tapping the sides until the plant and soill drop out, all in one piece. Place the entire plant in the new pot.

    • 2). Choose a planter that is larger than your small pot and that already has drainage holes drilled in the bottom. Small pots usually have bad drainage problems, so this is why you are using a larger planter and a gravel base.

    • 3). Place 3/4 to 1 inch of gravel in the bottom of the larger planter, and then sit the smaller potted plant on top. Place peat moss all around the remaining area inside the larger planter. Now when water drains from the bottom of the potted plant or runs over the sides, it will drain down through the moss, then the gravel and out the larger drain holes in the bottom of the larger planter.

    • 4). Water the new plants and check for proper drainage.

    New Planter With Liner

    • 1). Cut a piece of black plastic liner to fit inside the planter. Cover the bottom and sides, and leave about 6 inches extra on each side. You will trim this later.

    • 2). Cut drain holes through the plastic liner using the utility knife. Do this directly over the planter's own drain holes.

    • 3). Place a 2- to 4-inch layer of 3/4- to 1-inch gravel in the bottom of the planter. Level out the gravel with your hands. As you pour the gravel in the planter, keep the black plastic liner tight on all sides by pulling it gently up if necessary.

    • 4). Staple the liner in place using a staple gun. Cut off any excess material. Place soil in the planter, on top of the gravel. Plant your flowers or plants inside the soil. The soil should be just below the plant's lowest branch level and about 6 inches from the top of the actual planter.
