- Ketoconazole comes in a gel or foam-based treatments with the best-known brand being Nizoral cream. Ketoconazole is known as an effective anti-dandruff shampoo but is also used to treat a variety of fungal infections of the skin such as ringworm, jock itch and athlete's foot. When administered to the affected area once or twice a day, it helps to slow the growth of the fungi that cause the infection. Known side effects of ketoconazole include rashes, itching, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, impotence, blood count abnormalities, allergic reactions, severe depression, hair loss, and tingling sensations.
- An antifungal agent with minimal side effects and antibacterial properties, miconazole helps to control the growth of the fungi. Monistat-Derm cream is a brand of over-the-counter medication applied twice a day to help relieve itching, scaling, burning and discomfort caused by ringworm and other fungal infections. Known side effects of miconazole are irritation and burning.
- Lamisil cream is the best known brand of terbanifine, which is an antifungal agent taken orally or applied topically to the skin. Terbanifine acts by weakening the cell membrane that holds fungal cells together. Topical terbanifine is used to treat ringworm, athletes foot and jock itch, and should be applied twice a day for one to four weeks. Although it is safe to take, common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, hives and itching.
- Brand-name clotrimazole medications such as Cruex cream, Desenex cream, Lotrimin cream lotion and solution prevents the growth of fringworm when applied to the infected area twice a day. These treatments provide relief from discomfort of ringworm symptoms such as itching, burning and cracking. The most commonly side effects include redness, stinging, blistering, peeling, swelling, itching, hives or burning where the medication was applied.
