How to Make Your Own Root Cutting Mist System
- 1). Measure outside length and width of the aquarium.
- 2). Add 1 inch to each measurement. For instance, if the aquarium length is 20 inches, add 1 inch to this measurement. If the aquarium width is 12 inches, add 1 inch to this length. The measurements for the next step will be 21-by-13 inches.
- 3). Construct a plant flat box out of the 1-by-4-inch lumber, using the measurements from Step 2 for the flat perimeter. Cut two pieces of lumber the width measurement, and 2 pieces the length measurement. Cut three spacers the width's measurement out of the lumber. These will attach to the bottom of the flat.
- 4). Screw the width pieces to the length pieces on end with 1 1/2-inch Phillips head screws and an electric drill or screwdriver. Attach the three spacer boards with screws, evenly spaced, along the bottom of the flat.
- 5). Cut hardware cloth to the inside dimensions of the flat. Press the hardware cloth down onto the bottom board spacers. Fill the finished flat with potting soil. The potting flat is now ready for cuttings.
- 6). Turn the aquarium upside-down. Remove the bottom glass by either loosening the metal and caulking strips, or breaking the glass with a hammer. Remove any rough glass edges with pliers.
- 7). Apply a strip of painter's tape 1-inch down from the newly opened aquarium top around all four sides of the aquarium.
- 8). Spray paint the sides of the aquarium with white spray paint. Allow to dry, and remove the painter's tape.
- 9). Cut a piece of heavy gauge clear vinyl 3-inches larger than the top aquarium opening. Cut an opening at one corner large enough to accommodate the misting head. Duct tape the vinyl over the top opening of the aquarium.
- 10
Run a length of Schedule 40 PVC irrigation pipe from the water spigot to the misting box. Drill a hole in the center of the pipe for misting head installation. Install the misting head in the PVC pipe per product instructions. - 11
Duct tape the mister in position through the vinyl-cut hole in the top of the aquarium. - 12
Attach a timer with misting times programmed to the spigot. - 13
Place the aquarium over the cutting box. The root cutting mist system is ready for use.
