How to Plant and Space Garlic
- 1). Choose a planting location that provides six to eight hours of sunlight per day. The garlic plant requires well-draining soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.
- 2). Work the soil to a depth of 12 inches. Remove all weed growth. Add a well balanced general fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 at a rate of 3 lbs. per 100 square feet of garden space.
- 3). Break a garlic bulb apart into cloves. Plant the garlic one to two weeks after the first hard killing frost of fall. Plant each clove 1 inch below the soil's surface with the pointed end facing upwards.
- 4). Space the garlic cloves 3 to 5 inches apart. Space each row of garlic 6 to 8 inches apart.
- 5). Place 3 to 4 inches of straw over the tops of the newly planted garlic after the ground freezes. The straw will protect the garlic cloves from freezing temperatures and soil heaving.
