David and Goliath Craft
- Make David's slingshot and stones using homemade clay. Mix a 1 pound box of baking soda and a cup of cornstarch together. Add 1 1/4 cups of cold water. Cook over medium heat until dough has the consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove and cover with a cool cloth. Once the dough cools, split into separate sections. Knead a different color of food coloring into each portion. Roll between your hands and make stones. Take three pieces of brown dough and roll lengthwise. Attach two pieces, making two-thirds of a triangle. Connect the last piece where both meet to form the slingshot. Measure a piece of string across the top of the sling. Make an indention on the top of each side of the sling. Place an end of the string in each indention and pinch together.
- Obtain an old plastic ball, about the size of your child's head. Draw a line around the circumference of the ball. Cut the line completely through using a knife. Turn one of the halves over like it would sit on your child's head. Cut 1-inch slits on either side, towards the bottom of the ball. Place the ball on your child's head and measure a piece of string underneath the chin from one slit to the other, leaving about an inch to spare. Cut the string at this point. Insert both ends of the string into each slit. Tie a secure knot inside both slits. Cover the ball with aluminum foil.
- Draw the outline of a shield on a white piece of poster board. Use scissors to cut out the shield. Draw a design on the shield and color with marker or paint both sides of the shield using silver paint. Use a hole-punch and make two punches, one on the top right corner of the shield and the other on the bottom left corner. Measure a taut piece of string from one hole to the other, leaving an extra inch on both ends. Insert the ends into each hole and tie off.
- Make Goliath's sword using a 20-inch long piece of cardboard. Make the outline of the sword. Draw the tip about an inch wide. From the tip use a yardstick and measure an 18-inch straight line. Mark this point. Measure 1 and 1/2 inches from this point in both directions and make two marks. Draw lines from the tip to each marked point to form the sides of the sword. Draw the handle of the sword. Cut out the sword using a craft knife. Paint the handle brown, black or gold. Cover the sword in aluminum foil.
