  • 1). Pour 2 tbsp. of leather cleaner onto a terry cloth towel. Rub a 12-inch section of the furniture piece for 30 seconds. Move to the next 12-inch section and rub it for another 30 seconds.

  • 2). Return to the first section and wipe off the cleaner with a damp terry cloth towel. Repeat the cleaning action one 12-inch section at a time, rubbing for 30 seconds and wiping the cleaner off after one minute. When the whole piece is clean, let it dry overnight.

  • 3). Pour leather prepping agent into a bowl. Dip a 400 grit piece of sandpaper into the agent if the piece has a lacquer finish. Use 600 grit if the piece has a water-based finish.

  • 4). Sand the furniture piece in light circular motions, redipping the sandpaper as it dries out. Wipe the piece clean to remove the old dye. When the piece is dry, sand it lightly once more using 600 grit sandpaper for lacquer finishes or 1,000 grit for a water-based finish.

  • 5). Wipe the piece down with a tack cloth to remove dust. Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Pour the leather dye into a bowl.

  • 6). Dampen a paper towel in warm water and wring it out so it doesn't drip. Hold the paper towel in your hand by the corners, so the center puffs out. Dip the center into the leather dye.

  • 7). Apply the dye by rubbing the center of the paper towel onto the leather in a circular motion. When the entire piece is done, let the dye sit for 20 minutes. Apply another coat with a second damp paper towel for a darker finish.
