  Plant native buffer plants around the edge of your pond; they'll reduce erosion and increase oxygen levels. The extra oxygen they provide will help break down excess plant material and nutrients in the water and you'll have a healthier pond.   Control "green water" algae blooms, string algae and blanket weed with Algicides; these chemicals work but they'll kill plants like water lilies and hyacinths. Chemical flocculents can be used too; they work by coagulating the solids suspended in the water, these particles then settle to the bottom and can be removed by your filter. Bacterial/enzyme products are another option; they'll reduce ammonia and restrict phosphates and they're a lot safer for plant and fish life.

  Aerate your pond by setting up a small fountain; the extra oxygen in the water will help combat unwanted plants and the smells they bring to your pond. If you set up a fountain, be sure to keep your buffer plants trimmed and under control so they won't end up clogging the pump that makes your fountain work.

  Enlarge your natural pond by first draining it and removing all fish and plant life. Decide how much bigger you want your pond and then use an auger or backhoe to dig it out along the edges; dig several levels around the pond to accommodate different plants and fish. When you're finished digging, refill the pond and replace any plants and fish.
