How to Grow Strawberries in a Bowl-Shaped Pot
- 1). Plant a single strawberry plant in an 8-inch bowl-shaped pot. For multiple plants, use a larger pot and space the plants 6 inches apart. Plant strawberries in spring when the last hard frosts pass.
- 2). Place pieces of screen over the drain holes in the bottom of the bowl-shaped pot to keep the soil from leaking out when you water.
- 3). Fill the pot two-thirds full with potting soil. Use sterile commercial potting soil when growing strawberries in bowl-shaped containers.
- 4). Add a mound of soil in the center of single planters or at each planting spot for multiple plants. Make the mound about 1 inch lower than the top of the pot.
- 5). Take one strawberry plant and hold it at the crown. The crown is the spot where the green stems meet the root system. Spread out the roots and set the strawberry plant over the mound.
- 6). Press it down or build up the mound until the crown is half an inch below the lip of the pot. Fill in the rest of the pot with potting soil, keeping the soil line level with the crown and half an inch below the lip of the pot.
- 7). Pat down the potting soil around the strawberry roots and then soak the pot thoroughly. Check the bottom of the pot as you water. You know the planter is thoroughly damp when liquid starts to run out of the bottom.
- 8). Place the strawberry plants in a sunny spot. Check the moisture of the soil by pressing it with your fingers and add water when it feels dry. Shallow pots dry out quickly in hot weather. The plant may require water once or twice a day during hot weather.
- 9). Fertilize strawberries every two weeks using 10-10-10 balanced fertilizer formula. Use a water soluble fertilizer and add it to one of the watering sessions. Use fertilizer as directed on the product package.

Pick strawberries when they are red and ripe on the plant. Gently pull the fruit off the stem. Don't tug at the fruit. If it doesn't come away easily, its not ripe yet and you risk damaging the plant. - 11
Place strawberries in bowl-shaped pots in a protected spot in winter. A protected porch or garage, where the temperature remains around 40 F is ideal.
