How to Extend a Pond
- 1). Fill several garbage pails with water from the small pond. You add this water to the reconstructed pond.
- 2). Fill a large fish tank with water from the small pond. Remove all aquatic life from your pond with the use of a net. Place fish in the fish tank.
- 3). Use a submersible pump to remove all water from the small pond. Submerge the pump and place on to the bottom of the pond liner. Aim the discharge hose away from the pond. Plug the electrical cord into an electrical outlet. The pump automatically removes water out of the pond. Unplug the pump when the pond is dry. Remove the pump, then remove the pond liner from the pond.
- 4). Map out the extension area. Use the measurements of the new pond liner as a guideline. Mark the width and length of the extension area with white spray paint on the soil.
- 5). Use a round point shovel to dig; use the painted lines as a marker. Remove soil with a wheelbarrow. Continue to dig until the bottom of the excavation site is level with the bottom of the original pond. Use a square point shovel to level off the bottom of the pond.
- 6). Place the new liner in the pond. Smooth out all wrinkles; fold the edges of the liner onto the surface of the ground around the pond. Cover the edges of the pond liner with stones, bricks, railroad ties or logs. You must use heavy objects to secure the liner before you fill it with water.
- 7). Pour the water from the garbage pails into the reconstructed pond. Use a garden hose to fill the rest of the pond.
- 8). Fill half of a clear plastic bag with water from the fish tank. Add one or two fish to each bag. Slowly introduce the fresh water from the renovated pond into the bag. Wait 20 to 30 minutes to introduce each fish to the new pond.
