How to Vent an Electric Dryer
- 1). Locate a spot inside the laundry room where you want the outside dryer vent to be installed. You want the shortest and straightest route from the dryer to the outside. Use a drill to drill a small hole through the inside wall where you want to place the outside dryer vent.
- 2). Bend a metal clothes hanger in a 90-degree angle. Insert the clothes hanger into the wall and rotate it to see if there are any obstructions. If there are obstructions, you will need to locate the dryer vent in another area of the wall. When you have a spot that is free of obstructions, use a long drill bit to drill a hole completely through the wall to the outside.
- 3). Go outside and locate the pilot hole you just drilled. Use a 4-inch hole saw and a drill to drill out a hole for the outside dryer vent. Drill only through the outside wall.
- 4). Go back inside and drill the inside wall with a 4-inch hole saw. Clean any debris left behind in the hole by the drilling process.
- 5). Go outside and set the outside dryer vent into the newly drilled hole, and press it flush end against the house. Use a pencil to mark the mounting holes for the outside dryer vent. Remove the vent from the hole and set it aside.
- 6). Use a drill to make pilot holes for the securing screws where you marked with the pencil. Insert the outside dryer vent into the hole and line it up with your pilot holes. Secure the dryer vent to the outside wall using the supplied retaining screws and a Phillips head screwdriver.
- 7). Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the outside perimeter of the dryer vent where it meets the house. This will prevent rain and water from seeping into the wall behind the dryer vent.
- 8). Go inside the laundry room and attach one end of the dryer ductwork to the outside dryer vent. Place the clamp over the connection and tighten it with a Phillips head screwdriver.
- 9). Attach the other hand of the dryer ductwork to the dryer exhaust port on the rear of the dryer. Secure the dryer duct clamp over the connection by tightening the clamp screw with a Phillips head screwdriver.
