How to Make the Most of the Sales

The sales are everywhere, generous and desperate! They started well before Christmas and are now well and truly displaying signs of despair.
I believe we will all shortly get paid to take stock away from retailers' hands...
Anyway, we should all make the most of it as I do not think that next year's bargains will be as good: surviving shops will certainly not keep as much stock and will be trying to get full prices for their goods.
Shopping in the sales does not mean buying anything because it is cheap.
We all know that cupboard space -especially in London- is limited and there is no point in trying to fill a closet already crammed full of clothes.
So, we should remain fastidious and thorough in the way we shop, proceed with reason and be sensible.
Unless you have already spotted something you really want and that is now discounted, think about what you really need.
The best way to start is by looking at your wardrobe to weed out all the clothes that never get worn.
Create a pile of clothes that are neither your right colours nor the best styles for you.
This is the "charity shop" pile.
Then, put aside the ones that are flattering, both in colour and style.
Finally, create a third pile with clothes in your right colours but in the wrong style and vice versa.
This is the pile to work from.
Consider how you might make the clothes in it work.
How can you add a top to break up the colour or some accessories to make an outfit appropriate? MAKE A LIST! Also, have a look at your shoes (sorry, I am at it again!) and discard the ones that are really worn out and try to judge what pair you could get to jazz up an old suit or a dress.
If you have already a collection of neutral colours, how about investing in a pair of coloured boots or shoes? Purple is a great colour and there is a lot of it around.
Cashmere sweaters are piling up on the counters of rather empty shops at really good prices.
There is also a great mixture of cashmere and silk which is soft and very comfortable.
No better time than now to be able to afford a bit of luxury.
Don't forget to have a look at your underwear.
Now is a great time to replace a discoloured set or some rather worn out tights, socks etc.
Finally, think about what you have really missed this season - possibly a key item of clothing that you could now get on the cheap.
It may be a well-cut pair of jeans or a new jacket and a coat and try to convince yourself to walk into a more upmarket shop than you would have done at full price.
Quality lasts.
Please, do beware of the -70% - 80% discount rails: they very often display clothes that are either badly cut, small in size but with a bold print, or which date back a few seasons.
The best tip to remember: quality, not quantity.
Especially now, with all the hard economic times ahead, you want your clothes to last.
