Hello to all January Readers, In many parts of the U.
S.
it has snowed and the water outside has been frozen for some length of time, maybe just over night.
Even in Florida as far as Tampa, mostly inland.
We can think of keeping the water available for the birds.
We know to see the birds outside in the winter are a pleasant sight, seeing that winter has that barren look sometimes.
We are able to see the birds with out cover in most parts of the U.
S..
As where I am in Florida the foliage is mostly still there but, we still have to rake, some lose all their leaves.
The birds that are gone for the winter still have a few months in their wintering grounds.
There are the four groups of birds that classified in the migration.
  • Permanent Residents - The birds that stay all year, such as the sparrows and goldfinches.
  • Summer Residents - Birds such as the Purple Martins, who arrive in the spring.
Nesting in the summer and returning to the south in the fall.
  • Winter Residents - The birds that come south from southern Canada and spend the winter in the U.
    S.
  • Transients - The birds that are in the upper parts of Canada and go far south, past the U.
    S..
We see them only passing by on their way south to their winter grounds in early fall.
Then passing by again in early spring heading north to their summer grounds
Birds such as the Robin are reported in Missouri to be migrating all year.
The ones that spend the summer in the northern U.
S.
go to Missouri in the winter.
The ones that summer in Missouri go south for the winter.
They do not all leave at the same time so you will see different ones coming back and going at different times.
It has been estimated that out of about 215 species of nesting birds in Michigan, 90% migrate to some degree.
Over 100 who spend the summer in the U.
S.
leave the country to winter in the West Indies and Latin America.
So we will soon see the birds of the spring again.
While still enjoying the change from fall to winter we have the good in all seasons.
All the seasons have their special birds and the different things that they do to amuse us.
We do remember they have certain needs that we can assist in.
No matter what season it is we can do things to make their stay more comfortable.
Whether it is a heated bird bath, or high energy suet cake the winter is a time for a little extra care.
Until next time HAPPY BIRDING,
