    Doric Chiton

    • 1). Cut 4 to 5 feet of cording. Knot the ends of the cord to prevent fraying, if needed. To determine the required length of muslin, add 12 inches to your height. Your height is the required width of the fabric, measured from selvage to selvage. Wash and press the fabric according to manufacturer's directions and then cut the edges to the appropriate height and length.

    • 2). Fold the fabric down lengthwise 12 inches. Hold the fold in place as you pick the fabric up and wrap it around your body with several inches of slack on each side. The open side should be on your right. Have a helper pin the folds of fabric over each shoulder. The folded and open edges of the fabric should drape at your sides, leaving your arms free.

    • 3). Remove the chiton, leaving the safety pins in place. Sew the folds at the shoulders in place with 1 to 2 inches of stitching next to the safety pins. Remove the safety pins.

    • 4). Put the chiton back on. Tie the chiton with the cording at your waist. Adjust the fabric at the open side to fully cover the torso and legs. Pull the chiton up and drape the extra fabric over the belt. Add brooches at each shoulder, if using.
