    Making Paper Pencil Tops

    • 1). Cut two pieces of colored construction paper down to a 3-by-4-inch rectangle. Use different colors of construction paper to make the paper pencil top more vibrant.

    • 2). Place the two construction paper rectangles on top of each other and roll them tightly around the eraser end of a pencil. Keep about half of the paper tube above the top of the pencil.

    • 3). Wind a piece of string around the section of the paper tube that is covering the top of the pencil. Leave about 3 or 4 inches of string remaining at the end. For the best looking results, use a colored string that compliments the colors of the construction paper.

    • 4). Tie the string into two knots around the pencil covered end of the paper tube, again leaving a couple of inches of string dangling from the paper tube.

    • 5). Cut the tube down toward the eraser.

    • 6). Turn the tube slightly. Make another cut to create a thin strip of construction paper. Repeat this step until the entire construction paper tube has been cut into strips.

    • 7). Pull the paper strips outward to create a tasseled plume at the top of the pencil.

    • 8). Use a craft punch to make small shapes, such as hearts and stars, from construction paper. Glue the shapes to the ends of the frayed construction paper tube.

    • 9). Cut a colored straw into several small pieces. Use different colored straws that compliment the colors of the construction paper and string.

Thread the pieces of straw you have cut off and some colorful beads on to the excess amount of string from Step 4. Tie knots at the end of the string.
