How to Access the Kings Creek Cascades in Lassen Volcanic National Park
- 1). Visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park is easiest from the west and specifically off Interstate 5; the major north/south artery of California. From the north, the visitor takes State Highway 44 at exit 678, past Shingletown and east toward an intersection with State Highway 89. Highway 89 is the park road. From the south, the visitor will take exit 649 just north of Red Bluff and proceed east past Mineral to the Highway 89 turn-off.
- 2). Access the Kings Creek Falls trail head from the south entrance. The road winds past hot sulfur beds and pristine lakes before cresting at the ridge below Lassen Peak. Avoid the Kings Creek picnic area located in the Upper Meadow. The falls trail head is just past the picnic area and is well marked.
- 3). Park the vehicle in the designated parking area, somewhat smaller then expected, and begin the gradual descent along the creek. The hiker will trek past several small meadows with knee high grass and gathering places for deer. The meadows are inviting for mosquitoes, so be sure to have insect repellent. Wandering off the trail for photography purposes will only stir up a swarm of the pests and a feeding frenzy will ensue.
- 4). Visit during spring; though beware of a higher run-off volume. The flowers are in bloom, the animals are frisky and the bulk of the tourist season hasn’t arrived yet. In autumn many waterfalls dry to a trickle. At over 7000 feet, the park road is closed in the winter.
- 5). Stay in either Redding or Red Bluff. Both cities offer all the modern amenities of dining and lodging. The park road has six campgrounds which may fill up in the summer, so plan to make reservations. The closest camps to Kings Creek Falls are the two at Summit Lake.
- 6). Follow all rules and regulations provided at the park’s website or in available brochures at the visitor center. This involves everything from insect bites to bear sightings. The rangers will also provide updates on trail conditions and inclement weather.
