How to Change a Maytag Dryer Heating Element

    Replace the Element

    • 1). Unplug the dryer from the outlet or turn the power off to the dryer at the circuit breaker.

    • 2). Move the dryer away from the wall so it can be accessed. Remove the two retaining screws that attach the top panel to the back of the dryer using a 10mm nut driver.

    • 3). Lift up the rear of the top cover and slide it off the dryer by pulling back on it.

    • 4). Remove the four screws that attach the console to the dryer, using the nut driver.

    • 5). Remove the front panel of the dryer by removing the four screws that attach it to the dryer at the top.

    • 6). Open the dryer door and locate the two screws that attach the panel to the dryer. Remove them using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 7). Pull the front panel toward you and disconnect the interior light harness. This is disconnected by pushing in on the tab and pulling it out. Lift the front panel off the tabs across the bottom and set it out of the way.

    • 8). Locate the heater assembly toward the bottom right-hand side. It will be recognizable by its spring-like coils. Remove the retaining screw to the assembly with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 9). Slide the heater assembly out from the front of the dryer and disconnect the wires from the terminals on the assembly.

      Reconnect the wires to the new heater assembly and insert it back in place. Reattach the assembly by attaching the retaining screw.

      Line up the front panel over the three tabs on the bottom of the dryer and reconnect the interior light harness.

      Reattach the front panel to the dryer using the two screws at the dryer door opening and four screws at the top of the front panel.

      Replace the console by placing it back in place and securing with the attaching screws.

      Slide the top panels back onto the dryer and reattach it with the two retaining bolts at the back of the dryer.

      Plug the dryer back in and push the dryer back into position.Turn the circuit breaker back on at the breaker box.
