Serving one's country in the military is no small feat. After returning home from a tour of duty, many veterans seek to build their lives through education, business opportunities and housing. For veterans, there are numerous grants and awards that cater to these needs and are available on an annual basis. Here are some grants that cater to veterans. - Members of the U.S. military who have served in combat are eligible for a grant up to $7,000 a year as well as additional funds throughout the year or financial aid. Specifically in New York, D'Youville College gives out this award to full- and part-time students who are pursuing their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Interested parties should contact D'Youville College for an application via their website: http://www.dyc.edu/admissions/veterans_grant.asp.
- Veterans Tuition Awards (VTA) is a grant program for full-time and part-time students that awards up to 98 percent of a student's tuition or $4,895.10, depending on which is less. This is awarded every semester at any college or university, including technical and vocational training schools, and can be used for undergraduate or graduate studies in New York State. Veterans should begin this process by filing out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at least six months before attending college. Additionally, students must apply for this grant every year in order to receive award monies.
- A grant development company, the McCormick Foundation awards veterans--through their partners and donations--generous grants for various programs such as housing, psychological services, school and establishing a business. With awards throughout the state, the New York programs include the National Organization on Disability, which awards up to $270,000 yearly for those wounded in the Army; the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services Inc., an outreach program that specializes in psychological services to veterans and their families for up to $250,000; and the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System Foundation, which awards up to $250,000 for post-traumatic stress and various rehabilitative treatment programs for a year.
