How to Build a Stacked Stone Water Feature

    • 1). Excavate a spot for the pond liner. Choose a sunny spot and dig the hole a little larger than the liner. Smooth the bottom of the excavation so the liner sits flat on the ground. Set the liner in place and fill in the space around the sides with dirt from the hole, leaving the dirt about an inch lower than the rim of the liner so dirt doesn't wash into the pool when it rains. Tamp the dirt down firmly.

    • 2). Make a wide, flat base in the pond liner for the fountain with three or four flat stones. Arrange a smaller base on top of those and set the fountain in the center. Make sure the wiring that goes to the solar panel isn't constricted and that it will reach up and out of the pool to the area where you'll place the panel. Build up the water feature by stacking flat stones around the fountain.

    • 3). Fill the pond liner with water to the desired depth and turn on the fountain. Make adjustments to the stones or the placement of the fountain until you've created a water feature that's pleasant to look at and functional.

    • 4). Landscape around the pond. Choose a design that complements your yard. Lay gravel, small stones or mulch around the pond to hide the rim and let plants grow toward the edge of the pond. Lush ferns suggest a woodland hideaway. Bright flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Plant something, or arrange rocks artfully, to hide the pump's wiring.
