How to Treat Algae in a Gunite Swimming Pool
- 1). Confirm algae is present before you treat the swimming pool to ensure you are treating the right problem. Microbial and green algae bloom in the water, making it appear thick and green. Filamentous algae can coat the sides and bottom of your pool, growing in long "fingers" in the sunlight.
- 2). Treat algae in your swimming pool as soon as you have confirmed its identity. Buy algae chemical treatments at your local pool supply. Algae treatments may be general or specific to algae type. Apply algae chemicals to your pool, following the manufacturer's instructions, and supplement those chemicals with extra doses of chlorine.
- 3). Increase the water circulation in your swimming pool. Water movement makes it difficult for algae to grow as quickly. Install a filtration system with pump and filter or upgrade your existing system so it pumps a higher volume of water.
