How to Drill a Dryer Hole Through Brick
- 1). Decide where you want the dryer vent to penetrate your outside wall. Go outside and lay out the center of the desired area. Use a reference point, such as a window, to transfer the measurements from inside the home to outside. Drill a 1/4-inch hole with a power drill at this location all the way through the wall.
- 2). Go inside your home and check to see that the location matches up with where you planned the hole in Step 1. Remember, a 4-inch pipe will be penetrating this location, and you want enough room to accommodate it. A small hole is much easier to patch than a large one if you inadvertently drill in the wrong location.
- 3). Draw a 4 1/4-inch circle on the exterior brick with a compass using the drilled hole as the center.
- 4). Drill through the brick on the line made with the compass. Do this around the entire circle. Drill completely through the brick and space the holes about 1/2- to 3/4-inch from each other.
- 5). Place a chisel up against the circle at a 90-degree angle. Strike the chisel with a 2-pound sledgehammer. Work your way around the circle. The brick will begin to chip out and break between each drilled hole.
- 6). Clean up the hole with the hammer and chisel once the majority of the brick loosens up from the wall. What you should have left is a nearly circular 4 1/4-inch hole. It does not need to be perfect as the dryer vent cap will cover the imperfections.
- 7). Go inside your home and drill through any drywall, wood or other wall material with a 4 1/4-inch hole saw. Use the pilot hole you drilled in Step 1 as your center. Once this material is removed, you will have a clean hole for installing the dryer vent.
