About Pressure Cooker Relief Valves
- Relief valves reduce the risk of injury while cooking food under pressure. The relief valve is located on the cooker's lid. Some models include a gauge, so you can see the exact amount of pressure that has built up in the cooker. Other pressure cooker relief includes an additional pressure-relief hole in the lid and a gasket that can break so steam can be released from between the cooker's lid and base.
- Manufactures determine the pressure cooker relief valve size, features and style for their specific units. Higher-priced pressure cookers are equipped with more features on the pressure relief valve as well as additional safety features. When choosing a pressure cooker, look for pop-up pressure indicators, ease of cleaning, a heavy gauge of steel and a size suited for how you expect to use the cooker.
- A few other built-in safety features are available in newer pressure cookers. These include a locking handle that will not release until the internal pressure has reduced to a safe level. A safety pressure-relief system between flanges on the lid and base allows steam to push a gasket aside and escape. Well-written user guides can help educate you on the proper use, care and cleaning of a pressure cooker to maintain the safety features and reduce risks.
- Always clean the pressure-relief valve before using the pressure cooker. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintaining the valve. If your cooker has a secondary pressure relief hole in the lid, also clean it according to manufacturer's instructions. If you do not have a user's manual, look for the name of the manufacturer on the bottom of the base or under the lid, then look for a PDF version on the manufacturer's website. If there is not a section of the website with a directory of owner's manuals, call the manufacturer and request one.
- Always read the owner's manual before using a pressure cooker.
Only have your hands near the unit as needed, to adjust heat to reduce or increase pressure.
If the pressure-relief valve is releasing a lot of pressure and you need to reduce the heat, use a cooking mitt to adjust the burner just in case the cooker's gasket blows while you are adjusting the flame.
Check the gasket for signs of deterioration, such as nicks, cuts or folds, that could interfere with its ability to function. Replace this as needed.
