How to Cut Onion Flowers

    • 1). Purchase a large, round onion to create your flower. Vidalia onions, which are easy to find at supermarkets or to grow at home, are good choices.

    • 2). Peel the onion, removing all traces of skin from the outside layer.

    • 3). Slice 1/2 inch off the top of the onion using a kitchen knife, leaving the root end intact.

    • 4). Remove any remaining roots at the bottom of the onion, taking care to keep the rest of the bulb intact.

    • 5). Slice four lengthwise cuts into the onion, starting from the top; do not cut all the way through the onion. End the cuts approximately 1/2 inch from the root end of the onion, so no cut is complete. Cut the onion--in the same wedge-shaped pattern you would use to cut slices of pizza--to create eight onion sections.

    • 6). Spread the onion wedges apart using your fingers, to create an onion flower. The "petals" don't need to be widely spread apart; the onion will continue to "bloom" as it cooks.
