How to Build a Large Waterfall

    • 1). Pick a spot. Decide on the location for your waterfall, whether it be in the front yard, backyard or garden of your house. Remember to call your local utility company before you begin digging.

    • 2). Outline the water basin with a garden hose. Since you're building a large waterfall you will need the basin, which acts as the reservoir for the waterfall to be at least 6-feet wide and 6-feet long. This will hold 200 plus gallons of water once full. Use marking paint to mark the perimeters of the basin.

    • 3). Dig out your water basin. The depth of the basin should be at least 5 to 6 feet deep. Please see the "Resources" section of this article for more information on water volume calculations for a basin and waterfall.

    • 4). Place the pond liner into the basin, smoothing out any wrinkles or creases. Pull up the sides of the liner over the edge of the basin and secure the liner with large landscaping rocks.

    • 5). Place the pond filter into the basin.

    • 6). Dig out a smaller section just outside the basin for the waterfall. The section should be at least 6-feet long and 4-feet wide. The depth of this section can be 4 to 5 inches. Place the pond pump into the section and connect a water line from the pump to the pond filter. Connect the second water line to the pump and lay the water line down flat, positioned so it rests on the dug out section.

    • 7). Add landscaping rocks to the dug out section, creating a natural look. Be sure to hide the water line with the rocks, but do not place them directly on top as they could restrict the water flow from the basin to the waterfall. Position three rocks to angle down over the basin. This is where the water will fall into the basin.

    • 8). Add water to the basin, turn on the pond filter and prime the pond pump. Enjoy your new waterfall.
