    • 1). Search for some good reference images of deep sea creatures. Choose a bizarre specimen of the deep ocean such as a Dragonfish, for example. Select images that show this fish in detail. Prepare your drawing station in a well-lit area, and position the reference image beside your drawing paper.

    • 2). Decide on the scale of your drawing. Use a factor of 2, in other words, double the measurements you take from the reference image to draw the fish at twice the size. Measure the length of the fish, double it, and draw these points on your paper. Measure the width of the fish and plot these points along the tapering length of the fish.

    • 3). Plot the points along the fish where the fins are located and their respective dimensions. Measure the barbel, or bio-luminescent light, dangling from from the chin of the fish. Plot the location of the eye and the dimension of the open mouth. Draw dots along the lower side of the fish to show the row of the bio-luminescent lights from the gills to the end of the dorsal fin.

    • 4). Draw the sharp long teeth of the fish. Show the front fangs almost touching in its half open mouth and detail the row of teeth along the upper and lower jaw. Make them look thin and sharp with a slight inward curve. Draw a line to indicate the gills.

    • 5). Detail the eye and the bio-luminescent light patch behind it. Detail the gills and the row of lights along its side. Draw parallel lines to show all the individual rays within its fins. Draw these evenly, going out from the body at an angle.

    • 6). Shade the fish to give it some depth. Lightly rub a cloth along the shading lines to blend them into the lighter areas. Shade the fins darker to differentiate them from the body.

    • 7). Re-draw any lines that may be blurred from the shading. Clean up any smudging and come back to the drawing after a small break to examine it with fresh eyes. Make any necessary adjustments to finish the drawing.
