How to Change Sand Pool Filters
- 1). Turn off the power to your filter system.
- 2). Use either gate valves installed on your pump, skimmer and return fitting, or appropriately-sized plugs to stop all water flow to the system.
- 3). Remove the screw holding the valve-tank flange-clamp. Then remove both parts of the clamp.
- 4). Loosen all hose clamps attached to the filter canister and remove the canister end of the hoses.
- 5). Lift the multi-port valve off the filter tank exposing the sand bed.
- 6). Unscrew the canister drain plug to empty out any trapped water inside of the canister.
- 7). Remove all sand from the canister. Approach the bottom portion of the sand bed carefully so that you do not damage any of the laterals attached at the base of the center pipe.
- 8). Remove each of the laterals by either unscrewing them or folding them on their pivoted end until the center tube can clear the canister for removal.
- 9). Rinse the inside of the canister with fresh water, scrubbing any accumulated material off the inside surface.
- 10
Use chlorinated water as a cleaning solution. Never use soap or a foaming detergent. - 11
Replace the drain cap onto the canister. - 12
Reposition the canister onto the filter support stand and fill it halfway with water to cushion the lateral system from incoming sand. - 13
Place the sand shield on top of the center pipe and begin pouring the correct type and amount of sand into the top of the canister. Make sure that the center pipe remains covered and centered within the opening of the canister. - 14
Remove the sand shield and reattach the multi-port valve, making sure to connect the center pipe sections together. - 15
Reattach the multi-port valve and hoses with their hose clamps. - 16
Reattach the valve-tank flange-clamp and screw. - 17
Open gate valves or remove any inserted plugs. - 18
Change your multi-port valve to the backwash setting and turn on the pump for at least one minute. - 19
Turn off the pump and change to the rinse setting, allowing it to run for between 30 seconds to one minute, until the water in the sight glass runs clear. - 20
Turn off the pump and change to the filter setting, taking note at the starting pressure on the gauge when you begin to filter. Use that number as a clean pressure benchmark. Backwash your filter when that number increases by 6 to 8 ppi.
