Brainstorm relevant vocabulary words. You can browse end-of-chapter textbook reviews or review your notes. You even might include words that you are already familiar with to increase your exposure. If you want to create games for multiple classes, separate the lists by subject.

Review each vocabulary word’s definition, spelling and context. For example, you might define an integer, isosceles triangle or prime number as well as provide examples for visual references.

Create flash cards that present the vocabulary word on one side and definition on the other side. Instead of buying index cards, cut them out of construction paper. Punch a hole into the cards, then place them on a binder ring. You can decorate the cards with helpful or fun images, such as a piece of steel to associate with magnet.

Create a hangman game. Identify each word as a noun, adjective, adverb or verb, if possible. Write a general definition and the number of letters needed to identify the word. For example, you might use variations of the word "consider" such as "consideration," "considered," "considering" and "considerable."

Adjust games accordingly. You might start with 20 to 50 words and have more than 500 by the end of the semester or year. Create subgroups that distinguish the lists, such as by tagging lists (lesson one, two, three, four) or different colors.
