How to Plant Shrubs in November
- 1). Put on gloves to protect your hands and grab a shovel. Dig a hole that is wide and deep enough to accommodate the root ball of your shrub, plus a couple of inches.
- 2). Fill a bucket with water and pour half of it in the bottom of the hole to help reduce transplant shock to the roots.
- 3). Remove the shrub from its container. Grasp the trunk with one hand and pull upward, while pushing down on the edges of the container with the other. If the shrub's roots are bound in burlap, cut the burlap with a sharp knife. Knock some of the soil off the root system to free roots from the shape of the container or burlap.
- 4). Set the shrub in the hole. Check to see that the base of the trunk sits slightly above the ground line. If it sits too deep, remove it and backfill accordingly.
- 5). Step back and check that the shrub is standing straight. Adjust as necessary. Fill in with soil on the sides of the hole, pressing it in firmly to eliminate air spaces around the roots. Pour the rest of the bucket of water around the base of the trunk.
