How to Choose the Right Gear for Bicycle Commuting
- 1). Decide how much stuff you're going to carry. If you have only a few things, consider a bicycle-messenger style bag. For heavier loads consider saddlebags or panniers; the type of pack you choose will determine what kind of rack you will need to attach.
- 2). Think about attaching fenders. If you want to ride in wet weather and avoid the telltale bike commuter wet stripe up your back, fenders are the perfect solution.
- 3). Get lights. A flashing red one to attach to the back of the bike or yourself is a good start. Think also about a halogen headlamp that clamps to your handlebars. A few rechargeable batteries added to the mix and you will be quite visible to fellow motorists.
- 4). Decide what you want to wear while you ride. Bike-specific clothes are built for comfort and come in varieties that will protect you from whatever weather system you may encounter.
- 5). Get a helmet and make sure it fits comfortably and is easy to adjust so you'll wear it. It shouldn't shift about too much on your head and the straps should fit snugly under your chin.
- 6). Include a basic tool kit. Add other accessories as you need them: lock, handlebar extensions, bell, pedal clips, water bottle, odometer and a spare tire tube.
