    History

    • Based on fossil evidence, roses have been around since before modern man, and they have been cultivated for 5000 years.

    Geography

    • The rose as we know it was probably developed in southern Europe and Asia Minor.

    Types

    • There are three recognized rose groups, the species of wild roses, Old Garden Roses and Modern Roses. Modern Roses are the ones most people are familiar with. These can be further broken down into hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, patio roses, miniatures, climbers and shrub roses.

    Identification

    • Flowers of this genus with one exception have petals in multiples of five; more than 12 stamens; compound leaves with an odd number of leaflets; and thorns. Some also produce rose hips.

    Basic Care

    • Roses need 6 hours of direct sunlight each day and do best in a rich soil that holds moisture but drains well. Roses also benefit from frequent applications of 5-10-5 fertilizer.
