How to Dry Out A Wet iPhone

    • 1). The first step toward drying out a wet iPhone is to immediately turn off the device. Often times the iPhone will already be off by the time you pull it out of the toilet or cereal bowl, but if it is not turn it off immediately.

    • 2). Next, resist the urge to apply heat to the iPhone. The iPhone is filled with sensitive adhesives that can and will degrade when heat is applied.

    • 3). Take out the SIM card by taking a paper clip or small object and pressing the hole next to the slot on the top of the iPhone. There are directions online for this if you are having trouble.

    • 4). Using a dustbuster or other small vacuum, connect the vacuum line to the SIM card hole and let it run for several minutes. You can also try to suck moisture out of the speaker holes and power port on the bottom of the iPhone.

    • 5). Now you need to place the iPhone in a container filled with either rice or silica gel packets. You can purchase silica gel packets online or you can also go to a shore store and ask if they have extra ones on hand.

In either case, place the iPhone in the rice or silica gel filled container and do not place the lid on the container. You need the iPhone to be exposed to air so that evaporation can occur and humidity does not build up.

    • 6). Let the iPhone sit in the rice/silica gel packets for at least a week. It may take less time than this but the longer the better. It does not hurt to put some new rice or silica gel packets with the iPhone after a few days.

    • 7). If your wet iPhone still does not turn on and/or function after a week of this, you can take the step of disassembling the iPhone. This will expose the interior components directly to the air and can help drying.

Note that this will void the factory warranty, although Apple can already tell if your iPhone was wet due a color changing material inside the device.

Directions for disassembling the iPhone can be found on the internet.
