How to Keep a Fabric From Fraying Without Sewing
- 1). Determine how susceptible to fraying your fabric is by rubbing or pulling on a raw edge with your fingers. If the threads come away easily, and the edges tend to be ragged, you will need to serge or zigzag stitch the edges.
- 2). For fabric that frays only moderately, leave a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Fold the seam allowance open and press with a hot iron.
- 3). Place the pinking shears parallel to the seam and trim the raw outer edges of the seam allowance. Place the fabric on a hard surface, such as a table, and cut with the pinking shears against the table for stability.
