What Are Uniform Crime Reports?
- The main Uniform Crime Report, "Crime in the United States," includes statistics for most major crimes in the country. This report covers murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. The report compares the crime rate for one year against the rate of previous years. It also makes comparisons by population group, region and for cities with a population of at least 100,000 people. The report includes arrest and clearance statistics, and information on the number of law enforcement employees at each agency. Arrest information is available for 29 different crimes.
- The annual "Hate Crime Statistics" reports crimes that were motivated in part or whole by a bias against the victim's perceived race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or disability. The victim may be an individual, business, institution or society as a whole. The report details the crime by number of offenders, apparent race of the victim and the type of location where the offense took place. It breaks down hate crimes according to state and local jurisdiction.
- The report "Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted" includes information on all sworn officers killed or assaulted while on duty, including those who die in accidents. The report lists details such as the specific circumstances, the type of officer involved, weapons used, if body armor was worn, the dates and times of the incidents, and the profiles of alleged assailants. The report provides a separate set of numbers that includes only federal law enforcement officers.
- The FBI also released a report in 2003 titled "Age-Specific Arrest Rates and Race-Specific Arrest Rates for Selected Offenses, 1993-2001." This report contains information that is not part of the "Crime in the United States" report. While the report only covers the years indicated in the title, information about more recent years can be obtained from the FBI website (see References).
