The Best Ab Exercises - The Cold Hard Facts

103 15
When discussing the topic of the best ab exercises with other fitness types, I've found the debate to be hotly contested and pretty controversial.
Everyone has a say about the best way to tone your waistline.
The internet and print magazines aren't much help either - filled with differing opinions and, let's face it, a lot of crummy info.
And there are a million different ab widgets and magic ab2000 style machines of dubious quality being pushed on nightly infomercials - purely because people want that attractive and ripped look for their midsection.
However, when it comes to the best ab exercises, most are missing the point.
The first step to a sexy six pack is to build a sound nutrition and training program that will maximize fat loss.
I'll go as far to say that fat loss equals toned abs.
In fact most folks probably already have pretty decent abs underneath their spare tire but if they don't choose the right course of action, even if they have the best ab exercises, they'll never shed their unwanted belly fat and their abs will be hidden under unsightly flab.
If everyone just shifted focus from directly training their abs to a far more effective approach of carefully selected routines of intense whole body workouts built from compound (multi-joint) movements they would be absolutely dazzled with the results.
And that's because the best exercises for abs and reducing belly fat are movements that use as many muscles in the body as possible.
Exercises like the squat, the dead lift, the lunge, kettlebell swings, and different types press and pull exercises give your body a massive return on investment when you use them to lose belly flab.
Use them in non-stop circuit style workouts, add interval cardio training to the mix and get your diet sorted - you'll have a potent mix guaranteed to skyrocket your metabolism and shed stomach fat fast.
Of course you can still do specific ab work as well - it certainly doesn't hurt.
But it's important not to go overboard with hundreds of reps of crunches and sit-ups (even if you STILL think they're the best ab exercises).
Frankly, if you can do more than 20 or so reps your abs are probably not working very hard anyway and will receive little benefit from the exercise.
Try to find challenging exercises that have you working in the 5 to 16 rep range - that should work well for most.
For the most part, adding weight or difficulty to an ab exercise will produce better results.
Easier is definitely NOT better where abs are concerned.
Try movements like the hanging leg raise (or knee raise if you find it too difficult).
Some people who can bang out crunch after crunch struggle to do 1 to 2 reps of a hanging leg raise with good form.
So to sum up: It's losing belly fat that will reveal your sexy six pack and not just doing crunches, sit-ups and the like.
There really are no best ab exercises for losing belly flab.
Just work on the building a good full-body, circuit style program with additional interval cardio sessions (I'd suggest separate days) and let a healthy diet take care of the rest.
