How to Make a Back Flap Pillow
- 1). Fold the larger piece of fabric in half and cut, on the fold, down the middle. If you want to be more precise, fold the fabric in half and iron the fold. When you open the fabric, mark the fold line, on the wrong side of the fabric, with a piece of chalk before cutting.
- 2). Lay one piece of the cut fabric flat on a table. Make sure the fabric's front is facing the table with the wrong side facing you. Measure and mark 1/2 inch from three edges of the fabric. Mark 1/4 inch from the edge on the final side. Try to place at least two chalk marks on each side. Now, connect the marks.
Draw lines along your chalk marks around the four sides of the fabric. Repeat this step with the second piece of cut fabric. - 3). Take one piece of cut fabric and lay flat. With the wrong side of fabric still facing you, make a fold along your 1/4-inch chalk line. Iron the fabric along this fold. Sew one seam down the folded fabric just inside the fold. Repeat with the other piece of cut fabric.
- 4). Lay your uncut piece of 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch fabric on the table with the wrong side facing down. Take one piece of cut fabric, with one edge sewn, and lay it squarely on top of the other piece of fabric, facing down.
Arrange the fabric so the sewn edge lays in the center of the bottom fabric. The other three edges of the top and bottom fabrics should align perfectly. Pin the two pieces of fabric together along your 1/2-inch chalk lines.
Repeat these steps with the other piece of cut fabric. The sewn edges of the fabric pieces should overlap, about 1 inch, in the center. Pin the fabrics together. - 5). Now, you have two pieces of fabric pinned together, top to bottom. With the back side facing up, pick one side where the flaps don't overlap and put this edge under the sewing machine. Starting in the middle of this side, sew a few stitches forward and a few stitches back along the marked 1/2-inch line. Sew to the first corner of the pillow.
- 6). Stop sewing at the first corner with the needle still in the fabric. Lift the presser foot and turn the fabric so the next side's chalk line is ready for a seam. Sew along this edge, slowing down when you get to the flaps. If you sew slowly, you should have no problem moving over these layers of fabric. Repeat the above steps for each corner until all four sides are sewn. Sew a few stitches backward, when finished, to end the seam.
- 7). Cut a little triangle off each corner, careful not to cut the seams. This will make your corners sharper. Turn the pillow inside out and iron each side where you've just sewn. Add the pillow insert to your pillow cover.
Don't worry if the pillow isn't perfect. After sewing another one or two pillows, you will be a pro.
